Sue E. Butterfield

Sue E. Butterfield, 74, of Momence, IL, died on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, at the Riverside Medical Center Emergency Room. She was born on May 19, 1951, in Kankakee, IL, the daughter of Hugh W. and Leona H. Charbonneau Butterfield. She is survived by her second cousins; Diane Kaffka of Tinley Park, IL, Evan Butterfield of Las Vegas, NV, David Moody of Batavia, IL and Jeri Meisch-Moody of Batavia, IL. She had many friends within the community who were like family to her. She spent many holidays with these people and often visited the local restaurants for breakfast and lunch. She is preceded in death by her parents; Hugh W. and Leona H. Butterfield and her brother, Eric S. Butterfield. She ran, operated and owned the Hoosegow in downtown Momence with her parents, she then later worked for Good Shepherd Manor, as a front desk secretary for nineteen years. Beyond her job, she spent many volunteer hours helping out at the manor and made many close friends. Susie also helped many people within the area with estate auctions and sales over the years. She was a member of the St. Patrick Catholic Church in Momence, IL. She served on the Momence City Council and Momence Park District. Susie was named as the 2023 Lifetime Achievement Award winner nominated by the Momence Chamber of Commerce. She volunteered for many events throughout the community, but you could always find her helping at the Gladiolus Festival. Susie could find treasure in other peoples' everyday items. She loved to go to garage sales, estate sales and auctions. She enjoyed having conversations with whoever she came in contact with and knew no stranger. You soon became a friend through discussions. Over the years, she sold antiques and collectibles at various locations around Kankakee County. She wrote a weekly column in the Progress Reporter called Susie's Corner. She was known as a local historian of the Momence Bordertown's history. Susie took great pride in continuing to sell her father's lithograph prints. She loved all animals, and especially enjoyed feeding the birds and squirrels of the neighborhood. She had many cats and dogs over the years. Cremation rites have been accorded. Graveside Committal Services will be held at a later date.
