Our legacy
Our firm dates back to the 1920's, when Raymon Canaday opened Canaday Funeral Service on Dixie Hwy. in Momence, IL. Our present location was built in 1899 by Dr. Burke, a long time physician in Momence. Mr. Canaday moved his business to our present location in the early 1940's. In the 1950's Bernard Boos joined the Canaday Funeral Service and became a partner in 1960. The Canaday – Boos Funeral Home continued after Mr. Canaday retired in 1964. In March of 1980 William L. Cotter purchased the funeral home and renamed it the Cotter Funeral Home. We are proud to carry on the tradition of quality, excellence and hard work as we continue to serve the families of Momence and the surrounding area.
Over the years our funeral home has undergone several renovations and additions. In 1981 the funeral home added a chapel and visitation room and remodeled the business offices and restrooms. This also included adding a coffee room, a handicap ramp in the front of the funeral home and 4 car garage. In 2001 a casket selection room was added to our facility and it also can be used as a second visitation room and chapel as needed. A family room with table and chairs, full size refrigerator and microwave was added at this time for the families we serve. We also added a fully handicap restroom.
For music during a visitation or funeral service at the funeral home, families may choose from our extensive library of recorded music, bring in their own compact discs or tapes, or choose live organ or piano music.
