Obituary for Jacob S. Salm

Jacob S. Salm, 87, of Bourbonnais, IL, died on Thursday, December 20, 2018, at the Miller Rehabilitation in Kankakee, IL. He was born on December 7, 1931, in St. Anne, IL, the son of Simon and Jennie Provily Salm.

He married Wilhelmina Sikma on March 24, 1955, in St. Anne, IL. She preceded him in death on August 10, 2008. He then later married Verdelle Buckman Schafer on June 25, 2010, in Kankakee, IL. She survives.

He is survived by four daughters and sons-in-law; Bonnie and Bruce Schaafsma of Momence, IL, Kathy and Michael Patrick of MO, Nancy and Gary Baranowski of Rogers, MN, and Lori and Tim Wright of Covington, KY. Two brothers; Sam and Ann Salm of Sheboygan, WI, and Andrew and Mary Salm of Lee’s Summit, MO. He is survived by seven grandchildren; Anna and Jeremy Landrie, Sally and Joseph Brogan, Jacob Schaafsma, Belinda and Scott Ferguson, Lucas Baranowski, Kayla Wright, and Jenna and Mason Vermilion, and three great grandchildren; Milly and Willa Landrie and Nora Brogan. Two step-children; Kenneth and Melissa Schafer of Rochester, MN and Karen and John Komperda of Trever, WI. Also surviving are seven step-grandchildren; Hannah Robbins, Alexa Robbins, John G. Komperda, Patrick Komperda, Vivienne Schafer, Blake Schafer, and Evan Schafer.

He is preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Grace Sikma. He was a retired farmer that raised grain, vegetables and gladiolus flowers. He also retired from Armstrong World Industries. He served in the United States Army as a sergeant first class during the Korean War. He was a member of the First Reformed Church of Wichert, where he served as an elder, deacon, Sunday school teacher and member of the choirs and quartets. He was also a member of the Kankakee Farm Bureau. He enjoyed bowling, reading, golfing, music, and especially spending time with his grandchildren. Jacob’s priorities in life were faith and family.
