Michael R. Hemphill

I am sad to announce the death of my husband, Michael Hemphill on March 19, 2014. He was my soulmate and the most wonderful husband a woman could have. He was born to Russell and Virgina Hemphill on June 18, 1938. He lived most of his life in Momence, Illinois and was married to me, Judith Hemphill in 1973. He is survived by his children, William (Danni), Audrey (Michael Fraizier), Danielle (Tim Fontaine) and Sarah (Jay Martel), his sisters Judy Gonczy of Momence and Pamela O'Connor of Indianapolis. He has ten grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren. Mike was very involved with the running of the community. He was a building inspector for many years, on planning and zoning committees, a school board member for 16 years and school board president for some of those years, a Ganeer Township trustee for many years and Ganeer Township Supervisor since 2002. He took these jobs very seriously and loved this community. Mike began painting with his father, Russ Hemphill, owner of Hemphill Decorating when he was a young boy. When his father died he became the sole owner. Many of you are acquainted with his impeccable workmanship. He was never really retired until a few years ago. Mike attended Lewis University, Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, and the Art Institute of Chicago. Art was his passion. He loved painting, woodworking and wood carving. He was a member of the Art League of Kankakee and Momence and participated in many art shows throughout the years. Many of you are owners of his fine creations. He enjoyed making toys for his children and furniture for his home. Michael will be greatly missed by the community, friends and family. We are assured that he is in Heaven with his Heavenly Father and that we will see him again. A Celebration of Life will be held on Tuesday (March 25, 2014) at 11:00am at Calvary Community Church in Momence. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Kambly Living Center (1003 North Avenue, Battle Creek, Michigan, 49017) where his nephew resides. Service: A Celebration of Life service will be held on Tuesday (March 25, 2014) at 11:00am at Calvary Community Church in Momence.
